Immerse yourself in the hauntingly beautiful and ethereal world of the Black Square Quartet.

Black Square Quartet was founded in 2018. Inspired by the iconic and controversial artwork The Black Square by Kasimir Malevich, one of the first true examples of artistic minimalism, the quartet aims to challenge and inspire audiences with unique & innovative repertoire choices. A sense of beauty and melancholy permeates Black Square Quartet's work, creating a haunting and emotive experience.

With a strong focus on new and Australian music, Black Square Quartet has premiered works by composers such as Thomas Green, Ken Thomson, Cathy Likhuta, and more. Collaborating with some of Australia's finest musicians and ensembles including Trichotomy, Shugorei, Sarah Curro, Aaron Brown, and Steve Newcomb, Black Square Quartet brings a fresh perspective to classical music that you won't want to miss.

Proudly presented by Tom Atkin Hall and Red Chair Compass Tours, the Black Square Quartet Southeast Queensland Tour is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, and the Federal Government through the Office for the Arts LIVE MUSIC Australia Program.

Two of these wonderful musicians last joined us in February, with the Brisbane Tango Orchestra and Owen Salomé. Join them on Saturday, as they return to their classical inspirations with Black Square Quartet.

Very regretfully, we are postponing this Sunday’s SWEET THUNDER JAZZ ORCHESTRA performance …. In difficult times, pre-sales may be no measure of our eventual audience, but in this instance, we cannot have a Big Band with an empty dance floor. We apologise for any inconvenience and/or disappointment.

We look forward to welcoming revered Gold Coast Big Band, Sweet Thunder, when they bring this special show “Music is My Mistress”, to the hall later in the year. Celebrating maestro Duke Ellington (with specially commissioned arrangements of The Duke’s catalogue), it will set the hall alight and the dance floor will be open. Please stay tuned for an update.
